Wireless networks have gained widespread deployment due to the relative ease of deployment. Unfortunately, in an adversarial environment, wireless networks pose many more risks than wired networks. For example, an attacker in a wired network needs to connect to the network, whereas in a wireless network the attacker need only be within wireless transmission range of a victim. Furthermore, unlike many areas of security, wireless transmissions are physically symmetric: it takes the attacker and normal user the same amount of power to modulate the same signal. This talk explores two secure primitives for wireless networks with broad applicability: a jamming-resilient broadcast mechanism that uses asymmetric knowledge to defend against insiders that wish to jam, and a man-in-the-middle detection mechanism based on secure time synchronization. | ||||||||||||

In this talk, I will discuss the impact of Internet architecture design on network security. In the past few years, there have been many attempts to develop solutions to protect our networked system against large-scale attacks such as worm, DDoS, and spam. However, it seems to us that most, if not all, of the proposed solutions are not likely to be effective, given the growth of attacks in both numbers and depth. Therefore, the network security community, under the scope of NSF/FIND (Future Internet Design) has been searching for the root causes behind these attacks. One such proposal, currently being developed at UCDavis, is called DSL (Davis Social Links). Under DSL, we push the concepts of P2P, social networks, and trust management into the network layer, while we remove the requirement of global network identity (e.g., IP addresses or email addresses, for the context of spam). |
